Did the Queen have to approve Harry and Meghan Markle’s baby name?

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have announced the birth of their second child – daughter Lilibet, who was born on Friday June 4.

The couple confirmed the news in a statement on Sunday June 6:  ‘It is with great joy that Prince Harry and Meghan, The Duke and Duchess of Sussex, welcome their daughter, Lilibet “Lili” Diana Mountbatten-Windsor, to the world.

‘Lili was born on Friday, June 4 at 11:40 a.m. in the trusted care of the doctors and staff at Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital in Santa Barbara, CA. She weighed 7 lbs 11 oz. Both mother and child are healthy and well, and settling in at home.

‘Lili is named after her great-grandmother, Her Majesty The Queen, whose family nickname is Lilibet. Her middle name, Diana, was chosen to honor her beloved late grandmother, The Princess of Wales.’

When it comes to the names of the next generation of royals, they tend to stick to pretty traditional choices.

The last royal baby was Princess Eugenie’s son with husband Jack Brooksbank, and though his first name, August, was perhaps more modern than other royal baby names, his middle name remained traditional and honoured the late Prince Philip.

In the case of Harry and Meghan baby Lili has been named after Queen Elizabeth – but are all baby names in the Royal Family traditional because they must be approved by Her Majesty first?

Does the Queen approve Royal Baby names?

It’s understood that the Queen doesn’t have to approve of royal baby names, but often her advice and blessings are sought, with her being informed of the proposed name before anyone else.

As royal commentator Kate Williams explained in an interview to CNN, the names chosen by royal parents must first be cleared with the queen, though ultimately the final decision rests with the parents.

She suggests: ‘Of course they have such respect for the Queen that if she says “I really don’t like that name”, they’d definitely take that into account.’

Moreover, it’s thought the freedom to choose a name depends on your place in the line of succession.

Reported by Vogue, Carolyn Harris, a professor of history at the University of Toronto School of Continuing Studies and author of Raising Royalty: 1,000 Years of Royal Parenting, says: ‘The further down the line of succession, the more likely you are to have a more unique or untraditional name.’

Has the Queen ever disapproved of a name?

One of the few reported cases where the Queen’s dislike of a suggested name led to a change is thought to be with Princess Beatrice.

The firstborn to the Queen’s son Prince Andrew and then-wife Sarah Ferguson, it’s reported that the couple initially decided on Annabel.

  • The Queen is ‘absolutely gobsmacked’ by Prince Harry’s ‘The Me You Can’t See’ Much like the Oprah interview, it feels like the Windsors haven’t actually watched The Me You Can’t See. The Queen and Prince of Wales have likely been given the broad strokes from their advisors, who of course concentrate on all of the Prince Harry-specific parts. But by making it sound like the series is simply Harry spilling his guts out about his family, Salty White Folk Isle has really missed how groundbreaking the series is and what it is actually…
