SAN JOSE — The San Jose Earthquakes’ first game since March 7 was postponed hours before kickoff because players decided against participating in a show of support for Black people in the wake of another police shooting, according to a Portland Timbers statement.
Jacob Blake, 29, was shot seven times by police on Sunday in Kenosha, Wisconsin. Blake was shot as he attempted to enter the driver’s side door of his vehicle with three of his children inside, according to reports. The incident led to the Milwaukee Bucks’ decision to not play in Game 5 of their first-round playoff series against the Orlando Magic. Then the NBA postponed all three games scheduled for Wednesday.
The Quakes and Portland Timbers also decided not to play in one of six Major League Soccer games scheduled Wednesday night. The Orlando City-Nashville game was continuing in the second half when Portland officials announced the postponement.
“The Portland Timbers stand in support of our players and their decision not to play tonight,” a statement read. “Racial injustice and police brutality towards Black people in our country must end now.”
Atlanta United and Inter Miami also announced their game was postponed. Major League Soccer tweeted a statement condemning the killing and expressing support for the Black Lives Matter movement but had not immediately announced the postponement of other games.
