
It has been nearly six months since pop band Fitz and The Tantrums performed in front of a live audience. The Los Angeles-based sextet was at the tail end of its All The Feels Tour when the rapid spread of coronavirus forced Gov. Gavin Newsom to shut things down in California.
The band returned home and since then its members — vocalist Michael Fitzpatrick, vocalist-percussionist Noelle Scaggs, drummer John Wicks, keys player Jeremy Ruzumna, guitarist James King and bassist Joe Karnes — have been cooped up like the rest of us, bursting with an energy that they can’t wait to unleash on the masses.
The opportunity to play live shows again presented itself in the form of socially distanced, drive-in performances. The band is set to headline the drive-in at the Ventura County Fairgrounds’ Concerts in Your Car series on Aug. 29 and two shows at City National Grove of Anaheim’s Drive-In OC Sept. 5-6.
“We’ve always loved performing and that’s how we built our name in the early days of the band,” Fitzpatrick said during a recent phone interview.

“There’s nothing more exciting than getting to play for fans and certainly at this time I think it will have a real special meaning for everybody,” he continued. “For us, it’s the ability to get out of our houses and see other faces and see some joy and hopefully bring some joy to people, too. For that hour and a half, they can forget about all the stress and dark headlines in the news and just come have a dance party with us.”
Fitz and The Tantrums are known for high-energy live shows and dancy pop and neo-soul hits like “The Walker,” “HandClap,” “Moneygrabber,” “Out of My League” and “I Just Wanna Shine.” Fitzpatrick said this will be the band’s “first foray into the alternative universe” of drive-in performing, but they’re up to the challenge.
