This Water Flosser Cured My Fear of the Dentist

Photo Illustration by The Daily Beast/Scouted/AmazonI’m afraid of the dentist. But not because of the fluorescent lights and uncomfortable tools and machines—I’m afraid of disappointing them. It’s inevitable. Even my best brushing and flossing efforts sometimes aren’t enough to prevent the dreaded gum sensitivity and plaque buildup in at least one back molar that the dentist will point out to me. I understand it’s their job, but as someone who is obsessed with dental hygiene, I needed a solution. This, more than anything, is why I decided to invest in the Burst Water Flosser. The Burst Water Flosser is similar to some of the tools dentists have but safe enough to use without, you know, having gone to dental school. The cordless handheld device fits easily in my bathroom cabinet and looks ...

Local activist says violence doesn’t represent broader Black Lives Matter movement

The Black Lives Matter Movement protesting police violence against Black people spurred a series of protests and demonstrations last year in Jacksonville and across the country. Monique Sampson, a community organizer with the Jacksonville Community Action Committee, was active in the protests and said the violence that sometimes accompanied them goes back to the pain stemming from years of oppression and turmoil. “It is seeing George Floyd be choked to death in front of them. And it’s normal. It’s pain after these verdicts come out: Not guilty -- or these cops aren’t charged. And it stems all the way back from, of course, slavery, protests and rallies were met with water hoses and dogs in the middle of the Civil Rights movement back in the 60s -- but mostly in the modern movement from Tra...

Texas blackouts explained: Arctic weather shut down power plants as demand for heat surged, and the state’s grid is on its own

Summary List PlacementMillions of Texans are without heat and power as Arctic weather continues to barrel through the state. The blackout, which affected 2.8 million people across Texas as of Wednesday morning, is among the largest in US history. Mikel Arteta refuses to defend Arsenal star Willian after criticism since Chelsea transfer

Willian is yet to score for Arsenal (Photo by Visionhaus)Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta says criticism of Willian since the midfielder’s move from Chelsea is not ‘unfair’ given the expectations the club have of the Brazilian. The 32-year-old joined the Gunners on a three-year deal after his contract expired at rivals Chelsea and the move was seen as a coup for Arteta, who had made it clear to the club’s hierarchy how desperate he was to sign the winger. However, Willian has failed to score in his 24 appearances for the Gunners and he’s taken waves of criticism from supporters, who have accused the veteran of taking an easy pay day by moving to the club. Arteta typically defends his players and though he stressed he wants to protect Willian, the Spaniard says the criticism of the w...

Trump’s acquittal proves authoritarianism remains a ‘potent force’ in the US, but impeachment puts a ‘black mark’ on him forever

Summary List Placement"You've gotta remember you've already won." That's what GOP Sen. Ted Cruz said he told President Donald Trump's legal team amid the former commander-in-chief's second impeachment trial. Cruz was right. Trump was destined to be acquitted, and virtually everyone knew it before the trial even began. As expected, the vast majority of Senate Republicans voted to acquit Trump on the charge of inciting an insurrection in spite of the glaring, damning evidence against him. Jason Stanley, a philosophy professor at Yale University and the author of "How Fascism Works," told Insider the trial exhibited how the GOP has become a "complete norm-breaking party, because they regard the other side as illegitimate." Republicans fear becoming a permanent minority party and have wedde...

Sizing up the Dodgers’ non-roster invitees: Who are the players to watch?

Editor’s note: This is the Wednesday Feb. 17 edition of the Inside the Dodgers newsletter from reporter J.P. Hoornstra. To receive the newsletter in your inbox, sign up here. Time’s up. Pencils down. The off-season is over. Spring training is here. We tend to think of the off-season as the time when executives build rosters, and spring training as the time when players begin playing games, and that’s true. It’s also true that Bryce Harper became a Phillie two weeks into spring training in 2019, Roy Oswalt didn’t sign a contract until May in each of his final two seasons (2012 and 2013), and Roger Clemens did the same (in 2006 and 2007). Right now, five of FanGraphs’ top 50 free agents are still unsigned, and after the pace of this off-season I’m surprised the number is that low. Players w

Austin has attracted the likes of Oracle, Palantir, and SpaceX, among others. Here’s what it’s like inside Texas’s growing tech hub.

Summary List PlacementDroves of tech talent from Silicon Valley and beyond continue to head to Austin, Texas — if they haven't landed there already. In what many have called an exodus from the Bay Area, many tech workers — now untethered to their now-shuttered corporate offices — are able to work remotely and pack up for more affordable locales. Miami and Austin have turned out to be two of the most popular relocation spots. Oracle is moving its headquarters to Austin, and Palantir cofounder Joe Lonsdale, who already lives in Austin, confirmed in early November that he is moving his venture capital firm, 8VC, there as well. Tech executives like Dropbox CEO Drew Houston have announced they're moving to the Texas city. Tesla founder Elon Musk is building a new Cybertruck factory in Austin...
