Amid hesitancy, Louisiana gets creative in vaccine outreach

Brass bands playing at a 24-hour drive-thru coronavirus vaccine event. Doses delivered to commercial fishermen minutes from the docks. Pop-up immunization clinics at a Buddhist temple, homeless shelters, truck stops and casinos, with shots available at night or on weekends. And now, door-to-door outreach getting underway in neighborhoods where few people have gotten vaccinated. Louisiana is making a full-court press to get shots in arms, with aggressive — and sometimes creative — outreach to make it as easy as possible to get vaccinated. The effort comes as vaccine supplies are surging but demand is not. The state has enlisted health care workers, colleges, community groups and church pastors to help cajole the hesitant and set up vaccination events. Democratic Gov. John Bel Edwards has

White House: Intel on Russian ‘bounties’ on US troops shaky

The White House says that the intelligence community does not have conclusive evidence that Russian intelligence operatives encouraged the Taliban to attack American troops in Afghanistan. The assessment, revealed Thursday as the U.S. announced a host of new sanctions on the Russian government, undermines one of the sharpest attacks Joe Biden and other Democrats leveled against former President Donald Trump during the 2020 White House race. Biden repeatedly attacked Trump on the campaign trail for not standing up to Russian President Vladimir Putin despite his administration being aware of intelligence suggesting Russian agents were offering bounties to the Taliban. But on Thursday, White House press secretary Jen Psaki said that after a review of those classified reports, the intelligen

Biden meets Japan’s leader to boost China-facing alliances

President Joe Biden is welcoming Japan’s prime minister to the White House on Friday in his first face-to-face meeting with a foreign leader, a choice that reflects Biden's emphasis on strengthening alliances to deal with a more assertive China and other global challenges. Biden and Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga also look to counter messaging from Chinese President Xi Jinping that America and democracies in general are on the decline, after the political turmoil and international withdrawal that marked Donald Trump’s presidency. The Biden administration calls managing U.S. policies toward the Indo-Pacific, where China under Xi is flexing growing economic and military power, the primary challenge for the United States. That helped guide Biden's decision, announced this week, to pull U.S. tr

Group issues recommendations on how LA can commemorate difficult histories

Mayor Eric Garcetti on Thursday, April 15, released the findings of a group his office created to help guide Los Angeles on how to commemorate tragic and difficult aspects of the city’s history. The Civic Memory Working Group — made up of over 40 historians, architects, artists, indigenous leaders, city officials, scholars and cultural leaders — worked with community leaders, including L.A City/County Native American Indian Commission’s Executive Director Alexandra Valdes, to create civic memory recommendations in its 166-page report. The group recommends the city commemorate difficult histories, including through a citywide, ephemeral and permanent commemoration to victims of the 1871 Anti-Chinese Massacre on Oct. 24, 2021, the 150th anniversary of the day in which 500 white and Hispanic

China ramps up vaccination drive with free eggs, other goods

China's success at controlling the coronavirus outbreak has resulted in a population that has seemed almost reluctant to get vaccinated. So it is accelerating its inoculation campaign by offering incentives — free eggs, store coupons and discounts on groceries and merchandise — to those getting a shot. After a slow start, China is now giving millions of shots a day. On March 26 alone, it administered 6.1 million shots. A top government doctor, Zhong Nanshan, has announced a June goal of vaccinating 560 million of the country’s 1.4 billion people. The challenge lies partly in the sheer scale of the effort and the need to convince a population that currently feels safe from infections. When patients first showed up at hospitals in Wuhan in late 2019 with fevers, coughs and breathing difficul

Fox News Guest Claims Fauci Is Actually the ‘No. 1 Anti-Vaxxer’ in U.S.

Fox NewsDuring a Thursday night Fox News appearance, Dr. Jay Bhattacharya—who took part in Gov. Ron DeSantis’ coronavirus panel discussion that was pulled from YouTube for COVID-19 misinformation—claimed that the nation’s top infectious disease expert was actually America’s “No. 1 anti-vaxxer.” Hours after chief Biden medical adviser Dr. Anthony Fauci got into a heated exchange with Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH) over when Americans will have their “liberties” back,” Bhattacharya appeared alongside Jordan on The Ingraham Angle. Asked by host Laura Ingraham why Fauci wouldn’t give a “specific number” of COVID-19 cases he’d be comfortable with to return to normal, the Stanford doctor said it’s because “no number other than zero that will satisfy him.” Bhattacharya—one of the co-authors of the contr...

Shortage of intubation drugs threatens Brazil health sector

Reports are emerging of Brazilian health workers forced to intubate patients without the aid of sedatives, after weeks of warnings that hospitals and state governments risked running out of critical medicines. One doctor at the Albert Schweitzer municipal hospital in Rio de Janeiro told the Associated Press that for days health workers diluted sedatives to make their stock last longer. Once it ran out, nurses and doctors had to begin using neuromuscular blockers and tying patients to their beds, the doctor said. “You relax the muscles and do the procedure easily, but we don’t have sedation,” said the doctor, who agreed to discuss the sensitive situation only if not quoted by name. “Some try to talk, resist. They’re conscious.” Lack of required medicines is the latest pandemic problem to be

In this Sunday Nov. 8, 2015 file photo, Britain’s Prince William, right, and Prince Harry attend the Remembrance Sunday ceremony at the Cenotaph in London. Senior royals must wear civilian clothes to Prince Philip’s funeral, defusing potential tensions over who would be allowed to don military uniforms. Dodgers mark Jackie Robinson Day by gathering around Robinson sculpture

LOS ANGELES ― During the long down period of time between fans being allowed at Dodger Stadium, a bronze sculpture depicting Jackie Robinson sliding into home plate migrated from a left-field side entrance to the newly expanded center field pavilion. Mostly, the relocation makes the sculpture more visible to fans. It served another purpose Thursday. Prior to Thursday’s game, the Dodgers’ players gathered in full uniform around the sculpture, along with team staff and Manager Dave Roberts. It was Jackie Robinson Day across Major League Baseball, a day to commemorate the anniversary of Robinson breaking the color barrier with the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1947. Standing before a full pavilion, Roberts shared his thoughts about Robinson and his legacy. “We all know Jackie Robinson: the name, the 42

7 Hong Kong democracy leaders to be sentenced amid crackdown

Seven of Hong Kong’s leading pro-democracy advocates, including 82-year-old veteran activist Martin Lee and pro-democracy media tycoon Jimmy Lai, are expected to be sentenced Friday for organizing a march during the 2019 anti-government protests that triggered an overwhelming crackdown from Beijing. They were found guilty earlier this month of organizing and participating in a massive protest in August 2019, where an estimated 1.7 million people marched in opposition to a bill that would have allowed suspects to be extradited to mainland China for trial. The seven are expected to submit pleas for more lenient punishment before sentencing is handed down. They face up to five years in prison. Their convictions were the latest blow to the city's flagging democracy movement, amid an ongoing cr
