Bob Dole says he’s been diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer

Bob Dole, a former longtime senator and the 1996 Republican presidential nominee, announced Thursday that he has been diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer. Dole, 97, said in a short statement that he was diagnosed recently and would begin treatment on Monday. “While I certainly have some hurdles ahead, I also know that I join millions of Americans who face significant health challenges of their own,” Dole said. Dole, a native of Russell, Kansas, represented the state in Congress for almost 36 years before resigning from the Senate in 1996 to challenge Democratic President Bill Clinton. Dole had unsuccessfully sought the GOP nomination in 1980 and 1988, and he was President Gerald Ford's vice presidential running mate in 1976, when Ford lost to Democrat Jimmy Carter. After his last run for ...

The Constitution and Supreme Court set a high bar for gun control

On February 14, President Biden marked the third anniversary of the deadly shooting incident at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, with an announcement that he is calling on Congress to enact “commonsense gun law reforms.” As always, the details matter. The president defined “commonsense” as a requirement for background checks on all gun sales, a ban on “assault weapons and high-capacity magazines,” and an end to “immunity for gun manufacturers who knowingly put weapons of war on our streets.” The U.S. Supreme Court held in 2008, in the District of Columbia v. Heller decision, that the Second Amendment right to “keep and bear arms” is an individual right that is not contingent on service in “a well-regulated militia.” That means the U.S. Constitution limits the fede

If Ted Cruz Had Any Shame He’d Resign and Stay In Cancun

REUTERSI remember a political cartoon early during the Reagan administration that poked fun at his fondness for quick vacations, which became a running meme in the media decades before that word was invented. It went something like: Mr. President—inflation is high, unemployment is bad, your signature legislation hasn’t passed yet, and your Interior secretary is a walking disaster. What are you going to do? To which Reagan answers, go to Aruba and Barbados for five days. That was a mostly harmless little jape, as Reagan’s taste for a little R & R did the republic no real harm. Plus, the Republican Party had not yet metastasized into the sinkhole of amorality and un-conscience that it is today. And given that tragic decline, it’s only natural that today’s version of the Reagan story inv...

Djokovic made only one unforced error in more than 50 minutes. California unemployment claims rocket higher, pointing to weak job market

Unemployment claims in California have skyrocketed to their highest level in more than a month, officials reported Thursday, a grim sign that coronavirus-linked business shutdowns continue to weaken the state’s frail job market. Nationwide, workers filed 861,000 initial jobless claims last week, up 13,000 from the 848,000 unemployment claims filed in the United States the week before. Findings published in Lancet Infectious Diseases, show that vaccinating all babies on the day of birth with the Bacillus Calmette-Guerin (BCG) vaccine could potentially save thousands of lives a year in places with high infectious disease rates. The researchers say their results also increase the possibility that the vaccine might be used to protect children and adults against Covid-19 and other new infectious diseases. Dr Sarah Prentice, from the London School of Hygiene an...

TwitterSpeculation raged on social media overnight that Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) flew out on vacay to Cancun while his home state of Texas froze—but his office stayed completely silent on the rumors. However, Fox News reports that a Republican source has now confirmed Cruz’s trip.
