Sixty-two Santa Clara County schools and districts have applied for waivers to bring elementary school students back into the classroom, the county told this news organization on Wednesday.
Of those schools, 55 are private schools, three are charter schools and four are public school districts. The applications come after Gov. Gavin Newsom ordered all schools in counties on the state’s coronavirus watchlist — including most in the Bay Area — to begin the school year online.
Even before Santa Clara County released its waiver process earlier this month, most public school districts — whose teachers unions are largely in opposition to reopening — had already announced they’d start the year in distance learning.
So far, Santa Clara County has approved only two waivers to reopen: Moreland School District in San Jose, which was approved last week, and Sunnyvale Christian School, which was cleared on Monday and will be the first Bay Area school to bring students back into the classroom on Thursday. The state released a list Wednesday of more than 100 schools cleared to reopen, most in San Diego and Orange counties.
The Santa Clara County Public Health Department is still processing applications for the rest of the schools, and declined to comment on individual applications.
