Oakland: Lake Merritt weekend busts shows drugs, alcohol don’t mix

OAKLAND — Weekend permitted vendors at Lake Merritt routinely sell food, clothing, jewelry and other items to the large crowds that gather there.

But under-the-table sales of drugs and alcohol are no-nos, which two men found out Saturday, police said Wednesday.

About 12:30 p.m. Saturday a man, who had a stand with socks and other items for sale, was observed also selling marijuana, which he did not have a permit for, police said.

When officers confronted him, he quickly discarded a loaded revolver and started to run away, police said. Officers who chased him saw him dropping a bag of what turned out to be Xanax tablets during the pursuit before he was eventually captured and arrested, police said.

Police said a second vendor, who was legitimately selling water and soft drinks near Grand and El Embarcadero, was also illegally selling alcohol.

Police seized the alcohol and cited the man.

The two cases were done by the department’s Alcoholic Beverage Action Team working with the department’s Lake Merritt Enforcement Team with the purpose being to identify people illegally selling marijuana and alcohol in the area.

Officer Jennifer Sena, the ABAT coordinator, said “operations will continue regarding unpermitted vendors selling marijuana and alcohol around Lake Merritt and throughout the city.”

Staff writer George Kelly contributed  to this report.
