The blistering heatwave is set to continue today but prepare yourself for thunderstorms to return.

The Met Office says the mercury is expected to push 30C across southern and western England.

Northern Ireland may hit 25C in Belfast, while temperatures are expected to be slightly cooler in the east of England.

Torrential downpours drenched Cambridge and Essex yesterday, while some people spotted hailstones ‘the size of bouncy balls’ in Milton Keynes.

One was so big it smashed a smashed a car windscreen in Leicestershire.

The mercury topped 32.2C at Heathrow Airport on Tuesday – the hottest temperature recorded so far this year.

The previous high came just a few days earlier on Sunday, when temperatures peaked at 31.6C, also in west London.

An amber warning extreme heat – the first ever issued by the Met Office – remains in place for much of the country.

It will last until midnight on Thursday for Wales and central and southern England, while Northern Ireland is on alert until Friday.

While much of England is set to sizzle today, scattered thunderstorms are forecast to return across the country’s east.

However, the wet weather is not expected to be as serious as the downpours which saturated much  of England yesterday.

The Environment Agency has 11 flood alerts – meaning flooding is possible – in place throughout parts of London, Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire.
