Big save: How Joe Ross’ dad prevented a woman from choking at Giants’ game

July 11, 20210

SAN FRANCISCO – Willie Ross attended Saturday’s game at Oracle Park with the simple intention of watching the Washington Nationals, the team his son Joe pitches for, play the Giants on what figured to be a picture-perfect day at the waterfront stadium.

It turned out that Ross was needed to save another person’s life.

Midway through the game, Ross, a pediatrician at Stanford Hospital, noticed an elderly woman sitting near him who was choking on some food.

“I saw her having some difficulties and I saw her companion helping her out,” Ross said. “So I was watching, making sure she was OK, and she gestured that she was OK, and I went over just to check, and she couldn’t talk. She needed help.”

Ross performed the Heimlich maneuver on the woman, who he said had three pieces of a hot dog lodged in her airway.

“I don’t think a lot of people knew what was going on because they’re focused on the game,” Ross said.

Two pieces of the hot dog came out, but the woman was still not completely fine. When the third piece was dislodged, Ross said it was “as big as my thumb to my first knuckle.”

Ross said the woman was actually a nurse who had recently retired after 53 years at Summit Medical Center in Oakland.

Ross spoke with the woman briefly after incident, describing her as embarrassed, but thankful and grateful. “As a nurse, she’s used to giving not receiving,” he said.

The woman was then finally OK, and a huge cheer erupted from the dozens of fans who were seated around the ongoing incident.

Ross has been around his share of serious medical situations in his time as a physician. “I’ve seen a lot of stuff,” Ross said. “In the grand scheme of things, this was low on the totem pole.”

Crawford went 3-for-3, including a solo home run in the sixth inning, and finished with three RBI to help lift the Giants to a 10-4 win over the Washington Nationals on Saturday at Oracle Park. Austin Slater, Joey…
  • SF Giants blast three home runs, Brandon Crawford leads the way on defense in win over Nationals SAN FRANCISCO — In the first two decades of home games the Giants played at China Basin, the waterfront ballpark gained quite a reputation. The downtown digs quickly became a pitcher’s paradise and a palace fit only for the all-time home run king. In other words, hitters hated it here. A Giants franchise that witnessed Barry Bonds pepper McCovey Cove and won three World Series in a five-year stretch gained a home field advantage by figuring out how to win…

  • Giants’ Gausman flirts with no-hitter, but falters in seventh in loss to Cardinals SAN FRANCISCO — First Kevin Gausman lost his no-hitter, then the shutout and eventually the game. Matt Carpenter had the big blow with a two-run triple in the seventh inning against Gausman Monday as the Giants fell 5-3 to the St. Louis Cardinals at Oracle Park. Gausman (8-3) threw 6 1/3 no-hit innings before the Cardinals broke through, and St. Louis got an equally stout performance from starter and winning pitcher Kwang Hyun Kim (3-5). Kim, a left-hander, had little…
  • SF Giants’ Alex Wood spins a gem, club extends lead in division after Dodgers lose SAN FRANCISCO — With an offense that’s struggling to hit with runners in scoring position, a rotation that’s been crushed with injuries and a team that appeared to be limping into the All-Star break, the Giants looked like a club that needed a jolt of energy. Starter Alex Wood was the man who provided it. For the second consecutive outing, Wood helped bring an end to a Giants (54-32) losing streak as he followed up a win over the Diamondbacks…
  • SF Giants’ All-Star contingent grows with Crawford, Gausman, and why group could get bigger PHOENIX — Brandon Crawford and Kevin Gausman took different paths to earn 2021 All-Star nods, but the sense of joy each Giants star feels on Sunday is the same. After Buster Posey was selected to start at catcher for the National League All-Star squad on Thursday, Crawford and Gausman learned Sunday that they’ll also be representing the Giants at the Midsummer Classic at Coors Field on Tuesday, July 13. Gausman, the Giants’ ace, has always had elite potential, but he’s…
  • Dodgers’ bullpen steps in early, carries the load to keep win streak going WASHINGTON — It’s a bullpen day-and-a-half now. Already down a starter for Sunday’s game, a one-hour, 44-minute rain delay cut Clayton Kershaw’s day short after four innings and put the Dodgers’ bullpen to work early. Five relievers each put up a scoreless inning in a 5-3 victory over the Washington Nationals Saturday night. Brusdar Graterol, Joe Kelly, Phil Bickford, Blake Treinen and Kenley Jansen protected what was a one-run lead most of the way with only Kelly and Jansen facing…
  • Austin Slater’s mammoth go-ahead home run leads SF Giants to comeback win PHOENIX — Austin Slater looked completely and totally lost. Entering Saturday’s game at Chase Field, the Giants outfielder was 0-for-his-last-14 with six strikeouts, a handful of lazy groundouts and several uninspiring at-bats that suggested his next consistent stretch of playing time might come for the Triple-A Sacramento River Cats. Slater didn’t have an extra-base hit in June, so when the right-handed hitter stepped to the plate against Arizona Diamondbacks southpaw Ryan Buchter in the eighth inning on Saturday, it wasn’t…
  • Why SF Giants manager Gabe Kapler isn’t shaking up his lineup or moving Brandon Crawford up in order SAN FRANCISCO — Brandon Crawford opened July with 12 hits in his first 23 at-bats, posting a 1.371 OPS that’s made him the most dangerous hitter in the Giants lineup in the last week. Despite Crawford’s consistency, Giants manager Gabe Kapler has routinely penciled him into the fifth slot in the lineup and did so again for Wednesday’s series finale against the St. Louis Cardinals. It appears Crawford’s production coupled with injuries to Buster Posey, Brandon Belt and Evan Longoria…
  • SF Giants still waiting for clarity on Buster Posey’s status as he recovers from thumb injury SAN FRANCISCO — Buster Posey will miss his second consecutive start as the Giants’ catcher deals with a thumb injury that forced him to exit Sunday’s game against the Diamondbacks early. After a foul ball from Arizona pinch-hitter Daulton Varsho struck Posey’s thumb awkwardly on his glove hand, he remained in the game for one more pitch before leaving the game. X-Rays were negative and Posey was diagnosed with a left thumb contusion, but Giants manager Gabe Kapler said Posey…
