TaxSlayer review 4x3

Summary List Placement

TaxSlayer is a do-it-yourself online tax software that allows you to prepare and electronically file your federal and state tax returns.

Its price options are relatively low compared to some of its competitors. Personal Finance Insider rated the product as the top value pick for self-employed filers, and a good option for others with straightforward taxes.

Here’s a breakdown of costs, not considering any discounts.

DIY online filing

Federal return cost

$0 – $54.95

State return cost

$0 – $39.95

Federal + state

$0 – $94.90

How much does it cost to file your taxes with TaxSlayer?

You can pay as little as $0 or as much as $86.95 to file your taxes with TaxSlayer. Prices vary based on what types of income streams and deductions you’ll need to include, and if you’ll need expert help.

If you don’t qualify for the free version and don’t need help filing your taxes, the best value is the Classic package, which covers all tax situations with no restrictions for $24.95, not considering any discounts. If you’ll need expert help, the next options cost $44.95, and $54.95, not considering any discounts. One important thing to keep in mind is that the paid packages do not include state filing, which is an additional $39.95 per state filed.

Unlike some of its competitors, TaxSlayer does not offer expert help as an additional add-on option. They do offer an Ask a Tax Professional option, which is included with the Premium or Self-Employed option at no extra cost. If you need help filing your taxes, you’ll need to upgrade to one of those packages.

TaxSlayer does not offer the option to download a software.
