This Morning has been flooded with Ofcom complaints after Dr Sara Kayat told viewers that the Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccine is ‘100% effective against hospitalisation and death’ after the first dose.

The television doctor made the bold claim to presenters Rochelle Humes and Phillip Schofield during an appearance last week.

‘What’s really interesting, and I think it’s a statistic that should be shouted from the rooftop, is that after 12 days from the first vaccination of the AstraZeneca vaccine, you are 100% effective against hospitalisation and death,’ Dr Sara said at the time.

‘So, those are the statistics we need to be hearing.’

A shocked Phil, asked: ‘Why haven’t we heard that before?’

‘That is an excellent statistic and I think it’s one that does need to be shouted about, but it’s one that’s only just been released,’ Dr Sara continued.

‘We only have some of the data available to us, but certainly, even the 70% effectiveness is a very good statistic.’

While the Oxford vaccine is highly effective and safe, scientists have confirmed it is 70.4% effective after two full doses.

However, when administered at a half dose and then a full dose the vaccine can be up to 90% effective.

Viewers were stunned by Dr Sara’s claims and rushed to social media flabberghasted.

‘Wow this is quite something…within 12 days you are immune from death…’ wrote one.

Another simply wrote: ‘Delusional and dangerous.’

A total of 156 viewers complained to Ofcom about Dr Sara’s claims, with the television watchdog confirming to Metro.co.uk it is still assessing the complaints.

The Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccine has been given regulatory approval by the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) after meeting required safety, quality and effectiveness standards.

MHRA Chief Executive Dr June Raine said: ‘We are delighted to announce the good news that the Oxford University/AstraZeneca vaccine for Covid-19 is now approved for supply following a robust and thorough assessment of all the available data.

‘A huge collaborative effort and commitment goes into these assessments which include reviewing vast amounts of data. Our staff have worked tirelessly to ensure we continue to make safe vaccines available to people across the UK.

‘No stone is left unturned when it comes to our assessments. This approval means more people can be protected against this virus and will help save lives. This is another significant milestone in the fight against this virus.

‘We will continue to support and work across the healthcare system to ensure that Covid-19 vaccines are rolled out safely across the UK.’

Metro.co.uk has contacted This Morning for comment.

This Morning airs weekdays from 10am on ITV.
