49ers health reboot costs long-time trainer his job

SANTA CLARA — Long-time athletic trainer Jeff Ferguson is the 49ers’ latest casualty in their New Year’s resolution to get healthier.

Ferguson became the 49ers head trainer in 2006 and was a holdover through five coaching changes during a 13-year tenure.

Injuries plagued coach Kyle Shanahan’s first two seasons, and partly because of that, the 49ers preceded Ferguson’s dismissal by firing head strength and conditioning coach Ray Wright last week.

“Following a thorough evaluation, we have determined that now is the right time for a reboot in the structure and protocols of our health and performance areas,” general manager John Lynch said in a statement. “On behalf of our entire team, Kyle and I would like to thank Ferg and Ray for the dedication and passion they brought to the organization.”

Whereas Wright’s tenure lasted just two seasons, “Ferg” was a 49ers fixture for 13 years, often the first trainer to rush onto the field when a player got hurt or briefing coaches on players’ conditions during practice.

“We would like to specifically recognize the contributions Ferg has made to the 49ers over the last 13 years, as he was always ready to extend a caring hand to our players, staff and their families,” Lynch added. “Both he and Ray are tremendous people whom we respect deeply, and we wish them and their families nothing but the best.”

Ferguson held a “vice president” title since 2013, as he oversaw more than just the training staff but also those who deal with players’ nutrition and rehabilitation.

The only other reported shakeup to Shanahan’s staff was last week’s departure of secondary coach Jeff Hafley, who became co-coordinator of Ohio State’s defense.
