Northern California cop arrested on domestic violence and animal cruelty charges

GRIDLEY — A Gridley police officer was arrested Tuesday and charged with alleged felony counts of domestic violence and animal cruelty.

Following a monthlong investigation, the officer, Devin William Pasley, 29, who is from Chico, was arrested at the Gridley Police Department by Butte County District Attorney investigators. He was taken to Butte County jail and was booked. He later posted a bail bond of $70,000 and was released. He will appear in Butte County Superior Court Thursday.

Butte County District Attorney Mike Ramsey said Pasley was arrested on an arrest warrant furnished by a local judge. Pasley, who has served with the Gridley Police Department for four years, allegedly abused his significant other and the mother of his child for a year. Ramsey said Pasley allegedly pinned the victim down in their home and choked their dog during the yearlong relationship.

Investigators from Ramsey’s office and Chico Police Department detectives conducted the criminal investigation of this case. The investigation coordinated with an internal affairs investigation started by the Gridley police after the domestic abuse was reported. Ramsey said Pasley was taken off duty and placed on administrative leave at the start of the Gridley Police investigation, according to a press release.

Ramsey also said Pasley was called to the Gridley police station where he was arrested and also served with a gun violence restraining order. Pasley’s home was searched after a search warrant was conducted and several personal firearms were taken into protective custody by Chico police.

Ramsey said domestic violence is a serious crime that often goes unreported for a variety of reasons, but his office is dedicated to fighting against domestic violence and helping domestic violence victims. The Catalyst Domestic Violence Services organization is available to help by calling (800) 895-8476.

No one is above the law, Ramsey said, not even those charged with enforcing the law.
