Recruiter reveals what employers are really looking for in job interviews – the ‘least risky’ candidate

Recruiter: Companies do not hire the best person for the job, but people who are the least risky

When you’re in a job interview – there’s pressure to stand out.

We want to be memorable. To leave a good impression. To make it clear that we are the best person for the job. However, that might actually be what employers are looking for.

A recruiter has revealed online that companies often don’t hire the ‘best candidate’ for a job – but instead they are looking for the person who represents the ‘least amount of risk’.

Runa Jiang, a hiring manager based in the US, stunned her TikTok followers with her latest job interview tips. She said that rather than looking for the most qualified, recruiters want people who they believe will last the longest.

She explained that one reason for this is that it can look bad on the hiring managers if they give someone a job and then they quit soon after.

‘Did you really think that companies try to hire the best most qualified candidates? Well they don’t, and I can let you know why,’ she said in the TikTok clip.

‘As a hiring manager, they don’t get paid more because you perform outstandingly. But they do get penalised if their candidates keep quitting early or disobey authority.’

Runa said the most qualified people – those with the most ‘experience and intelligence’ – are often the ones who leave a job the quickest. So these factors could even impact you negatively in an interview.

‘What kind of candidates quit early or disobey authority? Usually the ones that are the smartest or most qualified in terms of experience and intelligence,’ she continued.

‘So if they don’t want to hire the best candidates out there, who do they want to hire? People with the least amount of risks.

‘And that’s what interview questions are – they’re meant to measure your risk. “Why did you leave your company?” measures your risk of leaving again. “What is your biggest weakness?” sees how bad you can screw up. It’s all psychology.’

In other clips, the recruiter shared more advice on how to do well in interviews and impress your potential new boss.

When asked during an interview what the biggest challenge you have ever had to overcome is, Runa suggested you focus on the challenge itself rather than the ‘steps you took to overcome this challenge.’

‘They don’t care how you overcame previous challenges, they just want to know that you have been actually challenged,’ she said.

‘If the biggest challenge you have …read more
