San Jose: Authorities identify man killed in a crash after fleeing from deputies in stolen car

SAN JOSE — The man who was killed in a collision last month after fleeing from deputies in a stolen car in San Jose has been identified by authorities.

On April 22 at about 1:19 a.m., officers responded to the area of North First Street and Montague Expressway to a traffic collision, according to a San Jose Police Department news release.

A man — identified as 18-year-old San Jose resident Fabian Renteria Jr., was driving a 2014 Honda CRV with three passengers inside. He was traveling southbound on North First Street in the left lane when he approached Montague Expressway, authorities said. Renteria Jr. ran the red light at the intersection and hit the driver of a 2022 Toyota sedan, who was traveling west on Montague Expressway with a green light.

The Honda CRV had been stolen and was involved in a recent carjacking in the area of First Street and Younger Avenue, according to Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Deputy Russell Davis. The driver of the Honda didn’t yield to a patrol vehicle and, after a short pursuit by deputies, collided with the other car.

Renteria Jr. had major injuries, was found unresponsive and was taken to a local hospital, where he later died, police said. The three passengers — one man and two underage girls — as well as the man driving the Toyota were taken to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The death marked the 27th fatal collision of the year.

Traffic was impacted while authorities conduct their investigation and drivers were told to use alternate routes.
