Former England midfielder Fara Williams believes Thomas Tuchel should omit ‘desperate’ Romelu Lukaku from his Chelsea team to face Manchester City this weekend.
The Blues will look to keep their slim title chances alive on Saturday when they visit runaway Premier League leaders Man City.
Chelsea will close the gap on City to seven points with victory at the Etihad, but a home win will see Pep Guardiola’s side storm 13 points clear as they look to defend the title.
Club record signing Lukaku looks set to start for Chelsea after coming back into the side following the controversy over an interview he gave to Sky Sports Italia, but Williams reckons Kai Havertz should start ahead of the Belgium striker.
‘I think Kai Havertz could be a better shout against Man City than Lukaku,’ the ex-England and Everton star said on Premier League productions.
‘It’s hard to say that because, look, if you were to ask me earlier on in the season who to start, when Lukaku was in form and scoring goals, it would be easy.
‘So of course it would be a big decision but Lukaku looks like a player lacking confidence. He looks like a player who is desperate to show he wants to be there.

‘He was so desperate against Tottenham to show Chelsea fans that he wanted to be there but in that desperation you don’t perform. When you put too much expectation on yourself it can be hard to deliver.
‘He was working hard off the ball which we haven’t seen often but that’s not his game.
‘Whilst he’s in that frame of mind where he’s trying to prove to the fans, his team-mates and the board that he does want to stay and that the interview was a mistake, it might be better not to play.
‘I feel like he’s not at the levels that Havertz is at right now and Chelsea need everyone at their best to beat Man City.’

Lukaku angered Chelsea fans and Tuchel by giving an interview to Sky Sports Italia where he admitted he was frustrated at Stamford Bridge and hoped to return to Inter Milan in the near future.
Tuchel dropped Lukaku for the 2-2 draw with Liverpool earlier in the month but the 28-year-old forward has since returned, scoring in Chelsea’s 5-1 FA Cup win over Chesterfield and helping the Blues beat Tottenham in the semi-finals of the EFL Cup.
Chelsea will be without injured defenders Ben Chilwell, Reece James and Trevoh Chalobah at the Etihad, while Kepa Arrizabalaga will stay in goal in the absence of Africa Cup of Nations star Edouard Mendy.
